Topaz® Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

Topaz Wand

Topaz® Radiofrequency Coblation® for the Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis, the most common cause of arch and heel pain in the foot, typically resolves with conservative care.  For a small percentage of patients, pain can linger or become worse despite nonsurgical treatments. For those patients, we offer a minimally invasive procedure that has been shown to be as effective as traditional plantar fascia release surgery.

Topaz® Radiofrequency Coblation® uses a device called a Topaz® microdebrider to create small tears within the plantar fascia.  These small tears create an injury which starts an inflammatory cascade bringing increased blood flow to the plantar fascia.

The Topaz® Microdebrider Coblation® Wand is passed through small holes in the skin, eliminating the need for an incision and sutures.  Typically two to three dozen holes are created in a grid like pattern on the bottom of the heel where the patient is experiencing the most pain.

The procedure is performed at an outpatient Surgery Center under sedation. A walking boot is worn for 1-3 weeks after the procedure.  Most patients have significant pain reduction 4-6 weeks post procedure.
